ARE THESE COMMON SKIN SUPPLEMENTS MAKING YOU BREAK OUT?

There’s so much information out there on beneficial supplements and natural health products for every condition under the sun, including skin conditions. Many of us have spent a ton of time and money self-prescribing supplements, however some of these seemingly beneficial supplements might actually be doing more harm than good, contributing to breakouts without us even realizing it. Here are some of them I’ve uncovered in my research:

  1. High-Dose B Complex: While B vitamins are essential for skin health, high doses can overstimulate the adrenal glands in some individuals, leading to breakouts.

  2. Biotin: Often included in hair, skin, and nail formulas, biotin can interfere with the absorption of vitamin B5, which is crucial for regulating skin barrier function. This interference can leave the skin more prone to breakouts.

  3. Inositol: This common PCOS supplement can help with hormonal acne, but it may exacerbate breakouts if candida yeast is overgrown in the body. Inositol is considered a growth factor for yeast cells, so addressing candida overgrowth before using this supplement is essential.

  4. High-Dose Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate): Vitamin A is vital for skin health, but excessive intake, especially over a prolonged period, can be toxic to the liver and the body. This is why Accutane users must be on oral contraceptives—it's a precaution against pregnancy and vitamin A toxicity in the developing fetus.

  5. Fish Oil: While fish oil is beneficial for many aspects of health, it can cause skin congestion if liver and gallbladder pathways are sluggish. Inadequate bile production or flow to emulsify fats can lead to downstream effects seen as congested skin.

  6. High-Dose Vitamin D: Vitamin D deficiency is common and can impact skin health. However, excessive supplementation over time may increase testosterone levels in some individuals, which can contribute to acne.

While these nutrients play crucial roles in the body and skin health, it's essential to ensure we're consuming them in appropriate amounts. Bioindividuality—acknowledging that we're all different and affected by various factors—is key. Before incorporating supplements into your routine, consider consulting with a healthcare professional to determine the right dosage and suitability for your unique needs.
